Crescent Cove's Unsung Gardener

September 25, 2025

We are thrilled to celebrate one of our own! Janet Benway, a dedicated member of Crescent Cove’s Garden Committee, was recently honored by the University of Minnesota with the Unsung Gardener Award, which recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact on the Master Gardener program and their communities.

Crescent Cove has been deeply enriched by Janet’s vision and commitment. Since beginning her volunteer work in 2020, she has transformed our grounds into a place of beauty and healing for children and families.

Transforming Rock into Renewal

When Janet first arrived, the landscaping—designed to be low-maintenance by the previous adult hospice homeowner—consisted mostly of rocks and a few hardy plants. “There was lots and lots of landscaping rock and about four different plants,” recalls Marilyn Rynders, fellow Garden Committee member. With her background in trauma-informed gardening, Janet dreamed of creating not just a garden, but a sanctuary.

She and the Garden Committee began with the arduous task of hauling away tons of rock and replacing it with renewable mulch. Native plantings that are kind to birds, bees, and to those who gaze upon them were carefully selected and planted in and around the 3-acre property. Over time, meandering walking paths, flowering beds, and lush greenery have created a stunning landscape that invites peace and reflection.

Looking Ahead: The Serenity Circle

But Janet and the Garden Committee are not finished yet! Visitors may notice the newly cleared buckthorn and benches near the parking lot—early steps toward creating a “Serenity Circle,” a place for families to gather and reflect. As the circle began to take shape, Janet was deeply moved to learn that the surrounding cottonwood trees hold special meaning in Native American teachings, symbolizing the bridge between earth and sky. “It felt like a gift to discover that the trees already here were exactly the ones needed for families to imagine a bridge to their loved ones,” Janet shares.

A Gift of Time and Heart

This past summer Janet and others taught a Youth Education class at Crescent Cove as part of the Master Gardener program, walking through the gardens that have been created and the spaces yet to be made. Janet shared with the history of the garden, and how trauma-informed gardens can support healing for families navigating profound challenges.

“I am honored and would be nowhere if not for all the kind and talented souls I’ve met along the way,” says Janet of the award and her work at Crescent Cove. “I consider my time at the Crescent Cove garden, with all of my Friends of the Garden, as one of the most valuable gifts I’ve ever received. It is truly my ‘happy place!’”

We are so grateful for Janet’s vision, her tireless work alongside our Garden Committee members and volunteers, and the joy she has planted here at Crescent Cove.
