Finding Courage at the Starting Line: Twin Cities Marathon Weekend

October 6, 2025

“If you are losing faith in human nature, go out and watch a marathon.”
Katherine Switzer, first woman to compete in the Boston Marathon (1967)

This past weekend, 16 runners laced up their shoes and took their places at the starting line of the Twin Cities 10-Mile — each one running to raise money for Crescent Cove. Together, they raised more than $12,000 to support children and families who receive care at our Home. In total, they ran 29 hours, 28 minutes and 31 seconds on race day.

These runners represented so much of what makes Crescent Cove special: parents of children who were cared for in their final days, parents whose children come for respite stays, music therapists who bring comfort through song, and friends and supporters who believe deeply in our mission.

There are so many parallels between the journey of a long-distance runner and the experiences of parents caring for a medically fragile child — the constant effort, the exhaustion, the feeling that the finish line keeps moving. And yet, they keep going. Their endurance and love mirror the determination and heart that runners bring to every mile.

Along the route, Crescent Cove families and friends gathered in our cheer zone, ringing bells and shouting encouragement. The inspiration flowed both ways — runners smiled and waved as they passed, while those cheering were lifted by the runners’ courage and joy.

The celebration began even earlier at the Family Fun Tent on Saturday, where kids and families joined in games after the shorter races, from the diaper dash to the 10K. Staff and volunteers loved connecting with new and familiar faces and sharing the mission of Crescent Cove with everyone who stopped by.

The entire weekend was filled with energy, purpose, and community — a reminder that courage isn’t only found at the finish line, but in every step along the way.
