Love in Action: A Friendship That Gives to Others

February 8, 2026

Some friendships change lives — not just for the people in them, but for everyone they touch. For lifelong friends Jan and Kathy, their love for each other has blossomed into a beautiful tradition of giving that helps children and families at Crescent Cove feel that same love and care, every day of the year.

A Friendship Rooted in Love

Jan and Kathy’s story began before they were even born. Their parents were best friends — their fathers served as best men in each other’s weddings — and for a time, the two girls lived only a floor apart in the same duplex. Growing up side by side, they became like sisters.

Though their lives eventually took them to different places, their bond stayed strong. They stood in each other’s weddings, celebrated the arrival of their children, and continued to walk through life together. “Friendship is a treasure that is priceless,” says Kathy. “We are blessed to have each other.”

Discovering Crescent Cove

Each woman found her way to Crescent Cove through a different connection, but both were deeply moved by its mission to support families caring for children with shortened life expectancies. Kathy learned about Crescent Cove through her friends Jim and Judy Rice, while Jan was inspired by a family she knows whose son, Simon, receives respite care there.

“We’ve watched Simon go far beyond what was expected of him,” says Jan. “It’s amazing to see how Crescent Cove brings comfort and joy to Simon and his mom.”

Turning Friendship Into a Gift of Love

Over time, Jan and Kathy found a special way to celebrate their lasting friendship: by giving in honor of one another. Whether for birthdays or other meaningful occasions, their donations carry deep personal significance — expressions of appreciation for each other and support for families who rely on Crescent Cove.

“Neither of us needs another thing for the shelf,” Jan jokes. “Making these gifts is something that truly matters to both of us.”

Each donation represents not just generosity, but love in action — the kind of love that grows over a lifetime and extends to others.

This Valentine’s Day, Jan and Kathy’s story reminds us that love isn’t limited to romance. It’s found in friendship, community, and the joy of giving from the heart.
