A Place to Belong

Selenna’s Story at Sibling Camp

This year, 29 campers gathered for three days and two nights of fun, laughter, and connection at our 4th annual Sibling Camp—our largest group yet! Some faces were familiar, returning for their 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th year, while others were brand new, unsure of what to expect.

For many campers, the first few hours bring a mix of nerves and shyness. But by nightfall on the first day, something magical happens: walls come down, friendships begin, and smiles light up the Home.

Introduced to Crescent Cove Through Niko’s Care

“Camp is my favorite,” says Selenna, who has attended our Sibling Camp for four years.

Selenna first joined us at camp while her older brother, Niko, was receiving respite care at Crescent Cove—though not during camp itself. Throughout the year, Niko would stay at Crescent Cove for short periods, giving Selenna and her parents, Cha’Rell and Armando, the chance to rest and spend time together as a family.

Diagnosed with a rare mitochondrial disorder at a young age, Niko faced many health challenges and his parents provided and managed his care day in and day out. The respite breaks Crescent Cove provided allowed his parents and Selenna time to rest, recharge, and simply be together, while Niko received exceptional care, enjoyed pet and music therapy and more at Crescent Cove.

A Sudden Loss

Nearly two years ago, Niko died unexpectedly at age 13. His loss left a profound void in the lives of those who loved him.

“Niko lived a life full of tremendous love,” writes Natasha, a close friend of his mother. “His family made sure he experienced life to the fullest. Niko’s existence has made a significant impact in every heart who was lucky enough to meet him.”

After Niko passed, Selenna asked a Crescent Cove staff member who had attended his funeral: “Can I still come to camp?” She worried that, without her brother, she might no longer belong.

The answer was simple and sure: Yes. Once you’re part of the Crescent Cove family, you’re always part of it.

Where Siblings Belong

“Camp is the highlight of my year,” Selenna shared with a camp counselor last week. “I tell all my friends about it—and about Crescent Cove. I look forward to it all year long.”

Selenna’s story reminds us that Sibling Camp is not just a place to have fun—it’s a place to be seen, to be remembered, and to belong. For those who carry the memory of a sibling in their heart, that kind of connection means everything.
