At Crescent Cove, we reflect on the joys and sorrows of living with children with shortened life expectancies. The holiday season is no exception.
We held our annual Holiday Drive-Thru for families earlier this month where we welcomed 38 families and about 70 children to our Home. Cars moved slowly along our driveway, greeted by smiling volunteers and generous sponsors who showered families with gifts at every stop.
One dedicated volunteer, Jennifer, has handed out hot chocolate at this event for several years. This year, after unexpectedly losing her best friend—the person who used to help source the hot chocolate—Jennifer took it upon herself to keep the tradition alive. Despite the added challenges, she succeeded. “Last year, one of the kids told me the hot chocolate was their favorite part of the drive-thru,” she said. “I couldn’t let them down, even while coping with this loss.”
A few families attended the drive-thru, while their child who comes to Crescent Cove for respite care was in the hospital. Frequent hospitalizations are a mainstay of life with a medically fragile child, and these families forge ahead. “I had to be here because I know my son would be so sad that he’s missing it,” one parent said. “He’ll be so happy to see all the gifts he’s gotten once he’s home.”
It warmed our hearts to see several bereaved families come down the lane. For them, the holidays are a milestone of yet another special time that their child isn’t around to enjoy. And yet, being able to come back to Crescent Cove is one way they hold that child in their hearts, and do so with joy and love.
Volunteers, too, were deeply moved by the event. Days later, many reached out to share their gratitude. “We’re so thankful for the joy, community, and holiday magic this event brings each year,” said a volunteer from the Brooklyn Center Fire Department.
This event exemplifies the compassion and support that surround Crescent Cove families during the holidays and beyond. We’re profoundly grateful to everyone who made it possible.
